Exhibition - „... in Fried und Einigkeit ...“
The opening of the exhibition takes place on 12/04 at 7pm in the Bernardisaal Stift Stams.
In summer 1497, the king of Holy Roman Empire, Maximilian of Austria, met with a delegation of the Turkish Sultan Bajezid II on a lawn in front of the Cistercian Abbey Stams. The delegation included several German Kurfürsten and bishops, the papal legate of Alexander VI as well as envoys from Venice, Milan, Naples and Spain. The "big world" met in the Oberinntal in order to lay the foundation for piece between the occidental Christianity and the Ottoman Empire.
The special exhibition „...in Fried und Einigkeit...“ (in peace and unity) is dedicated to the various aspects of this meeting and the relationship of Maximilian with the abbey. Topics are, among others, Maximilian's Turkish policy, Abbey Stams around 1500, the course and the consequences of the peace meeting in 1497 as well as hunting as a means of court diplomacy. The exhibition also explains the complex relationship of the Cistercian Order with the Islam. For example, Bernhard von Clairvaux was one of the recipients of the first Quran translation into Latin by Petrus von Cluny.
